Thanks for your interest in joining our little group of misfits! We used to do full-on auditions at the beginning of each term, but in our new drop-in format, we have found that to be cumbersome for those looking to only come to one or two rehearsals. We have now done away with formal auditions, but we do want to try new choristers out on the fly for a single rehearsal before approving you to purchase discounted packages of multiple rehearsals.

For newbies, the procedure is now to drop in to a one single rehearsal. If you’re not sure what part you would normally sing, I’ll do a quick vocal placement right before rehearsal. If all goes well for us and for you (a.k.a., you found it easy to keep up with the sheet music and rehearsal pace and enjoyed our vibe), then we’ll email you links to the rehearsal bundles for you to continue this journey with us. We offer discounted packages when you register for multiple rehearsals per term ;)

Before registering for a rehearsal, please see below to get an idea of what kind of sight-reading skills are reccomended for rehearsal. Rehersals are non-refundable in the case that you show up without understanding that we use sheet music to facilitate singing together.

Do I need to be able to read sheet music to attend PopTones?

We use sheet music to facilitate rehearsals. You should be familiar with what sheet music looks like and have some basic familiarity with sheet music. As in, notes going up on the page meaning the notes go up in pitch; Ideally, some rhythmic concepts as well. You do not need to be able to fully sight-sing every note correctly in one try to join us ;)

We do try to email mp3s of each part weekly before rehearsal, but these are exported piano tracks playing your part. They are there to help you familiarize yourself with it ahead of time, but you don’t need to have it memorized or anything - in fact, we discourage memorization as sometimes i change things mouhaha 😈

Try this exercise - I’ll randomly drop out for a few notes here and there and your job is to see if you can fill in the gaps!

I’m not sure I can hold a harmony! What happens if my part doesn’t have the melody?

Here are two harmonization practice videos! We will take time to learn and clean up the parts together, to tune etc. Keep in mind that you’ll likely be sitting next to someone singing the same part as you. It’s much easier in a group ;)

What part should I register for?

We’ll ask for your vocal part when you register for a rehearsal - it is important for us to know the balance of voices ahead of time!

If you don’t know what part you should register for in your intake form, that’s ok. You can check things out here. If you have been in a choir before and you’re used to singing in a certain range, just go ahead and put that on the form. We’re pretty flexible.
